How to use Honored Citizen fares
If you’re enrolled in a program such as Oregon Health Plan, SNAP or TANF, or if you meet certain income requirements, you can get a low-income Honored Citizen Hop card with photo ID. Simply load money on your card, then tap it on the Hop reader each time you board.
Seniors 65 and older and Medicare beneficiaries
You can pay the Honored Citizen fare in cash on the bus, buy an Honored Citizen ticket at the grocery store. Proof of eligibility is required when boarding a bus, and fare inspectors randomly check fares on MAX, so be prepared to show your government-issued photo ID with your age on it (if you’re a senior) or your Medicare card and government-issued photo ID (if you’re a Medicare beneficiary). To avoid having to show ID, you can get an Honored Citizen Hop card with photo ID instead.
Riders with disabilities
If you have a verifiable mental or physical disability, get an Honored Citizen Hop card with photo ID. Simply tap your card on the Hop reader each time you board. Or, you can pay the Honored Citizen fare in cash on the bus, buy an Honored Citizen ticket from a ticket machine, or buy an Honored Citizen Hop card at the grocery store — but you’ll need to have your Hop photo ID card with you when boarding as proof of eligibility. Note: Honored Citizen tickets are also accepted on TriMet’s LIFT Paratransit service with an additional cash payment. Honored Citizen 1-Month Passes are not accepted on LIFT.
